Overview

Welcome to the first course in our series on Physical Security for Change Makers. This course is designed to be an introduction to the concepts and terminology that will be used in the subsequent courses and lectures.

Security is all too often seen as a burden, something that we do under duress and usually only after something has already happened. It can seem like we’ve been put at the controls of a Jumbo Jet and told to land it safely. No doubt the first time a trainee pilot sits down in the cockpit, they are equally overwhelmed, but with time and training, they learn to take control. For most, flying then becomes a lifelong joy.

So too, do we need to learn to take control of our security. Once we understand the threats, our vulnerabilities and capacities, we can begin to develop the strategies that keep us safer while speaking the truth to power.

After completing all of the lectures of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of terms such as Threats, Vulnerabilities, Capacities and Risk as they relate to Physical Security;
  • Identify what makes a Security Culture good or not;
  • Understand what a Security Strategy is and how they are used
